Rhynoceron is a puppetry piece exploring the parallel between a past when an animal thought to be myth suddenly appeared, and a future where an animal known to be real suddenly vanishes. This piece, currently in development as part of KT Shivak’s residency with HCL, features a lifesize rhinoceros puppet based on the history of this animal that sparked an obsession both to possess it and to consume its image.

Glow: HCL Film & Projection Night is more than a film screening. This one-night all-ages event, complete with classic movie theater concessions, highlights various approaches to creating light-based work. Featuring film, projection, music, mashups that blend sound and visuals, and conversations with artists, this event illuminates the visual side of the HCL Artist in Residency Program.

agua viva draws inspiration from the natural flow of water, starting with an exploration of amplified water sounds and the sonic possibilities of the human body. This creates a rich soundscape, fostering a dynamic, horizontal conversation between the performers and immersing the audience in an aquatic dreamscape.
Dance Sound Sound Dance is an evening of collaborative performances by DJs, sound artists, dancers, and movement-based artists intended to inspire movement with one another.
The event will begin with a short welcome and introduction to the Art/Access Lab series presented by HCL and UDF. The rest of the event will consist of short showings interspersed with time to mingle with fellow artists with disabilities.

LabE grew out of a convening of Chicago’s disabled dance artists in late 2022. A year later, we’re expanding the program to serve the wider disability arts community.

The convening will be facilitated by Maggie Bridger, Andy Slater, and Reveca Torres and is open to Deaf, disabled, sick, neurodivergent, and Mad artists (including those working through their relationship to these categories) working in all mediums.
High Concept Labs, in partnership with Experimental Station, presents new works by the 2023 HCL Fellow Artists in Residence. Each featured artist has selected one piece to present that has formed throughout their two year residency with High Concept Labs. The energy, ideas, concepts, feelings, thoughts, and processes of each of the six featured artists have coalesced and fused into the new works being presented across a full day of festivities at Experimental Station.

Allen Moore’s “The Black Arcade” Jam Sessions are a series of performative explorations of grieving through the sound making and visual artifacts. Building on Moore’s interest in afrofuturism and the sonic aesthetic of the black imagination, his Black Arcade sessions offer a caring and immersive soundscape that invites deep listening and creates space for personal reflection, grief, and renewal.
Waveforms is a semi-annual sound and multimedia festival organized by graduate students in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Sound Department.

Antonym: the opposite of nostalgia is a memoir of a Filipinx American childhood that interweaves music & movement, excavating insignificant yet indelible experiences. Using field recordings of NYC throughout the year, the four seasons serve as a cyclical frame & context for memory.

Douglas R. Ewart comes together with Renèe Baker (Violin, Viola and Voice) and Lou Mallozzi (electronics) in a trio called Sonic Bamboo Rhizomes for a special performance entitled Water Wise Bamboo Free dedicated to Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians Elders Lester Helmar Lashley, LaRoy Wallace McMillan, and Reginald "Reggie" Willis. This is the first in a series of performances presented as part of his current exhibition Douglas R. Ewart: A Retrospective at ESS’s Audible Gallery.
The first performance takes place Saturday, October 16 at 7pm for a live, limited audience in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood at the multidisciplinary arts hub High Concept Labs, located inside of the Mana Contemporary building.

Clichycago is a new initiative that aims to weave a strong link between urban peripheries from the South Side of Chicago and the Parisian suburb of Clichy-Montfermeil. Born of a desire to bring these two spaces together and to support the encounter between the people who shape them, Clichycago is a platform for exchange and experimentation. It constitutes a unique space-time, a third place where the voices and ideas of those who live, work and think in working-class neighborhoods and on the outskirts of the city mingle.
This collaborative project is co-produced by the Ateliers Médicis and the cultural services of the French Embassy in Chicago. Centered on the theme of " Communities chosen, communities endured", it aims to foster dialogue between artists, researchers, journalists, groups or organizations on multiple issues, from social justice to artistic innovation. Clichycago also supports creation for artists based in France and in the United States; their works will be displayed on the Internet and during events at partner venues.
To inaugurate this sharing of energies and ideas, and to initiate a fruitful and multifaceted dialogue, an original program of seven consecutive hours, equal to the time difference between Chicago and Clichy-sous-Bois/Montfermeil, will be broadcast online on June 26, on the website of the Ateliers Médicis as well as at the Hyde Park Art Center and the Ateliers Médicis, in Clichy-Montfermeil.
For seven hours, testimonies and initiatives from artists, various actors and cultural organizations from both sides of the Atlantic will come together. The eclectic programme is intended to reflect the diverse social and artistic dynamics that make these territories live and vibrate.
Live PA Edition 2: Methods of Ensuring Creative Performance
The Live PA Workshop Series consists of 5 free experimental workshops organized and conducted by Lional “Brother El” Freeman of The Beat Bank as live music sessions grounded in a tradition of social practice artistry. Each session will feature notable electronic musicians, practitioners and educators to cover different genres and styles of electronic music for performance. Bi-monthly, sessions will broadcast live video from High Concept Labs with an interactive audience. Join a free workshop as Brother El focuses on electronic music composition and performances techniques of Live PA, for streaming and in-person gatherings (as permissible).
