Soft Noise Skillshare

Series #4: Deep Listening | Veronica Anne Salinas

Soft Noise Skillshares are open to women and gender-nonconforming participants of all skill levels, ranging from enthusiast to professional.

In this two-hour Deep Listening workshop, we will use our ears, voice, bodies, and dreams to explore the practice of Deep Listening. Deep Listening is a creative and meditative practice developed by composer Pauline Oliveros that nurtures a deeper consciousness of sound within the listening body. Guided by the modalities of listening, sounding, movement, and dreaming, we will embark on a collective process of experimentation and expression. In this session, we'll tune our ears with collective listening meditations, run through exercises for collective improvisation, then move on to listen to the body with a series of light movement prompts, then close with a serene dream meditation for the group.

This workshop aims to expand the boundaries of traditional listening and will hopefully leave you feeling rejuvenated, centered, and inspired to embrace a heightened connection to the world of listening. No prior experience with sound or music is necessary!

Please Note: Participants should wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to move a little. Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat and water, if possible. HCL will have floor cushions available for everyone. If you feel you may need accommodations or accessibility assistance please contact Veronica at veronicaxanne@gmail.com.

About Veronica Anne Salinas

Veronica Anne Salinas (she/they) is a sound artist, writer, educator, and Deep Listener. She explores artistic research through compositions, soundwalks, text scores, improvisation, field recordings, archives, writing, and performance. Through these mediums, she explores concepts of orientation, perceptual shifts, near spiritual experiences, listening environments, and amplifying marginalized voices. As a dedicated listener and teaching artist, Veronica collaborates with the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology, Chicago Public Schools, and Campbient to nurture the growth of listening as social practice. Her passion for Deep Listening emerged during her time working with mentor David Dove and Nameless Sound (formerly the Pauline Oliveros Foundation Houston) in Houston, Texas, the birthplace of composer and Deep Listening pioneer, Pauline Oliveros. She has studied at the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and holds an MFA in Sound from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Her work has been featured at the Bemis Center, Ragdale Foundation, New Music Gathering, Experimental Sound Studio, Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain, Omaha Under the Radar Festival, Museum for Contemporary Art Chicago, Gene Siskel Theatre, Center for Engaged Research and Collaborative Learning at Rice University, Vermont Studio Center, Lawndale Art Center, Sala Diaz, Cities and Memory, and many others.

About Soft Noise Skill Share

The Soft Noise Skillshare is a series of bimonthly workshops highlighting women, trans, and non-binary sound artists and practitioners. These events, aimed at demystifying the sound-making process and addressing barriers to entry in the audio fields, are open to all skill levels and experience, ranging from absolute beginner to professional.

Soft Noise Skillshares encourage inquiry, exchange, improvisation, and play for all in attendance in order to demystify the sound production process and address barriers to entry in the audio field for those who do not identify as cis-gendered male. With input from community members, curator Meredith Haines is bringing together women, non-binary, and transgendered hosts from many corners of sound, such as field recording, DAW operation, hardware hacking, synthesis, and more.

Artists will develop events around their own strengths, with each installment typically including elements of performance, artist talk, lecture, hands-on workshop, and experimentation session.
