Glow:
HCL Film & Projection Night

Doors at 6:00pm
Performances start at 6:20pm
Program Duration: 3 hours

Glow: HCL Film & Projection Night is more than a film screening. This one-night all-ages event, complete with classic movie theater concessions, highlights various approaches to creating light-based work. Featuring film, projection, music, mashups that blend sound and visuals, and conversations with artists, this event illuminates the visual side of the HCL Artist in Residency Program.

Glow will present live performances by Christopher Knowlton (HCL Artist in Residence) and Regina Martinez (HCL Fellow Artist in Residence) who both integrate projection, sound, and technology into their performance practices. These performances will be followed by feature films by two HCL Alumni, Ben Baker-Smith and Monica Thomas, who utilize film as a critical component within their audio/visual and dance/movement practices.

Rounding out the program will be a shorts program featuring work selected from an open community call.

Feature Films

Ben Baker-Smith | Tamarack Base (Larix Laricina)

Monica Thomas | To Be Announced

About the Artists

Christopher Knowlton is a transdisciplinary movement artist and research scientist who uses emerging technologies to create augmented performance work. Having trained in contemporary dance and engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Chris moved to Chicago to complete his Ph.D. in Bioengineering at University of Illinois at Chicago. Inspired by science, nature, play, improvisation and human-centered approaches to design, he has produced many solo and collaborative dance works that have been featured locally and internationally, spanning dance, film, new media, puppetry and storytelling. Chris was a Chicago Dancemakers Forum 2020 Lab Artist, a 2022 Ragdale in Schools Fellow and a 2023 Chicago Cultural Center Dance Studio Resident Artist. Chris is also a biomechanical research scientist and manages the Motion Analysis Laboratory at Rush University Medical Center.

Regina Martinez, also known as selective listening, is a sound centered artist based in Chicago. She grew up in Saint Louis, Missouri where she was artistic director of the Pink House neighborhood art space for creative exchange with children and their families. She is co-creator of “the clothesline” monthly one-night audio-visual installation in St. Louis. More recently she was program manager for Threewalls in Chicago, and received an MA in Sound Arts & Industries from Northwestern University.  She continues to carry with her the wisdom of clotheslines and the artwork of children.

Monica Thomas is a screendance director and choreographer, an actor/dancer/arts educator, and an advertising copywriter. Her dance films have shown at film festivals nationally and internationally. As a Chicago performing artist, she performed with local theatres and dance companies including Mordine & Co and Drury Lane Theatre as well as acting in commercial projects for Target, Walgreens, among others. Her commercial acting experience inspired her to enter the advertising industry and after completing a Masters in PR & Advertising from DePaul University she now works as an advertising copywriter.
