High Concept Labs (HCL) has provided residencies to over 300 artists and artistic groups across genres and disciplines. We are committed to providing an accessible residency environment that enables experimentation, discovery, exchange, and risk.

The Artist in Residence (AIR) program is HCL’s flagship, 12-month residency that supports artists to develop time-based work. Artists receive a stipend, no-cost studio space, and professional photo and video documentation, along with tailored curatorial, development, and marketing support.

This residency is designed to meet artists where they are in their creative process, and the 12-month format is intended to support artists as they move through the various stages of developing new work: from research to rehearsals to work-in-progress presentations. With our mission grounded in promoting visibility for the creative process, we actively seek opportunities for artists to meaningfully connect with public audiences.

We support five Artists in Residence each year, selected through an annual open application juried by a panel of HCL’s Artistic Advisory Council. These artists work in tandem with our Fellow, Partner, and LabX Residency variations.

HCL is best positioned to support artists broadly working within the realm of performing arts including but not limited to movement, dance, puppetry, sound, new media, and multimedia. We work with each artist to design their residency in order to promote an articulated practice or process.

The 2024 HCL AIR program provides artists with a full calendar year of the following support (January through December, 2024):

  • $1000 stipend, provided in two installments

  • No-cost access to shared studio (Typically 6-8 hours per week, based on needs and availability)

  • Access to equipment loans

  • Professional photography and videography of select studio sessions and public engagements

  • Presenting opportunities through HCL’s Open Lab program

  • Ongoing promotion and visibility through HCL’s marketing, outreach, and public relations efforts

  • Strategic networking for partnerships, funding, and creative collaborators

  • Field-based or cross-disciplinary mentorship

Additionally, based on the needs and interests of each Artist in Residency, HCL may be able to provide:

  • Teaching and workshop opportunities

  • Individual artist grants application assistance

  • Administrative and producing assistance

  • Marketing, communications, and design support
