Building Plans for our Future

We believe in artists and trust in their process. Please believe in HCL and support our process with an end of year gift.

We are in the final two weeks of our 15th Anniversary Campaign, a call for support to ensure that we can continue our legacy of bringing artists and audiences together around the creative process.

We are 67% to our goal of raising $125,000 by December 31, 2024. We need your help to close the gap.

Artists, audiences, and organizations, including HCL, are all adjusting to a quickly changing arts landscape. Some changes are long overdue, like an increasing commitment to pay equity within the nonprofit sector. Some changes are natural yet disrupting the status quo for developing and presenting new work. For example, according to a 2023 DCASE report, in-person attendance at Chicago performing arts events has decreased by 59% since the Covid-19 pandemic..

Other changes are putting the financial viability of niche organizations like HCL at risk: In short: costs are increasing, funding sources are shifting, and after years of post-pandemic recovery, cash reserves are lean.

This is all to say that 2024 is a crucial year for fundraising, at HCL and beyond. We know the need across the arts sector is great, but we refuse to adopt a scarcity mindset. With your help, we are building plans for our future that center the needs and priorities of our community while embracing the role of ideation and iteration at the organizational level. While our next strategic plan is still in development, there is one thing we know for sure: With a focus on partnerships and resource sharing, we will continue protecting time for artistic experimentation in an increasingly fast and product-driven world.

We believe in artists and trust in their process. Please believe in HCL and support our process with an end of year gift.

In solidarity,

Angee Lennard
Managing Director
