Sofía Gabriel

Sofía Gabriel is a performance artist, dancer and arts administrator from Mexico City, based in Chicago. She studied and taught classical and contemporary dance in Mexico and holds an MA in Arts Administration and Policy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Her practice expanded from dance and technique-focused work to explore improvisation and play, engaging in somatic experimentations and dialogues with other mediums like sound, painting, and new media. She believes in feminism as a body-centered resistance to patriarchy, aiming to forge new discourses that can be equitable and just for all humans. Sofia is a performer at the Space Movement Project, and has been an artist residency and a fellow artist at High Concept Labs in Chicago and Proyecto Ace in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has performed at venues such as High Concept Labs, Experimental Station, Dovetail Dance Studios, Comfort Station, The Rooted Space, Elastic Arts and the Chicago Cultural Center. Her curatorial work includes exhibitions and performance festivals at Hyde Park Art Center, High Concept Labs, Co-Prosperity Sphere, UNAM Chicago, and SAIC Galleries. As an arts administrator, she has worked in various capacities with organizations and artists in both Mexico City and Chicago, including Tania Candiani, Jorge Marin, the Museo Universitario de Art Contemporáneo (MUAC), The Hyde Park Jazz Festival, The Field Foundation of Illinois, Museo Nacional de Arte, Hyde Park Art Center, The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Affairs (DCASE) and Gallery 400.
